Short answer: 90% of first layer adhesion problems on Bambu Lab printers are fixed by washing the build plate with warm water and dish soap (not just an alcohol wipe), setting the correct bed temperature for your filament (55–60°C for PLA, 70–80°C for PETG), and letting the printer run its full auto bed levelling before the print. If the first layer still won't stick after that, the usual culprits are wet filament or a first layer that's printing too fast.

Why first layers fail
A first layer sticks when three things line up: a clean plate surface the plastic can grip, a bed temperature that keeps the plastic soft enough to bond while it's being laid down, and a nozzle that's the right distance from the plate. Bambu Lab printers handle the third one automatically with lidar or strain-gauge bed levelling, which is why on these machines the problem is nearly always the first two — contamination or temperature — rather than the classic manual-levelling issues older printers suffered from.
Step 1: Wash the plate properly (skip the shortcuts)
Fingerprints are the number one adhesion killer. The natural oils from your skin create an invisible non-stick layer, and an isopropyl alcohol wipe often just smears those oils around rather than removing them. Do this instead:
- Take the plate off the printer and wash it under warm water with a few drops of ordinary dish soap (Morning Fresh works fine).
- Rub the surface with your fingertips or a soft sponge — no scourers on smooth PEI.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean paper towel.
- From then on, handle the plate by the edges only.
And here's the habit that makes the biggest difference in family households: wash your hands before taking a finished print off the plate. Kids are the classic culprit — home from school, snack in hand, they'll peel a print straight off with fingers carrying food grease, dust or playground dirt. Every one of those touches transfers oils and grime onto the plate, and the next print pays for it with a failed first layer. Make “wash your hands first, then pop the print off” the house rule and your plate stays grippy far longer between proper washes.

Step 2: Match bed and nozzle temperature to the filament
These are the real-world settings we run in the Sydney workshop on Bambu Lab machines:
- PLA (Bambu PLA Basic, PLA Matte, BIQU PLA GO): nozzle 210–215°C, bed 55–60°C on textured PEI. If a big flat part keeps lifting at the corners, nudge the bed up 5°C before you touch anything else.
- PETG (Bambu PETG HF): nozzle 240–245°C, bed 70–80°C. PETG grips PEI aggressively — on a smooth plate use a thin layer of glue stick as a release agent so you don't tear chunks out of the coating.
- Silk and translucent PLAs (Bambu PLA Silk, BIQU Aura Silk / Translucent): run the top of the PLA range, around 215°C, and slow the first layer down — silk blends are slightly stiffer and appreciate the extra heat.
- ABS/ASA (enclosed printers like the P1S, X series and H2 only): bed 90–100°C, doors closed, and use Bambu's liquid glue or a dedicated engineering plate.
One Australian-specific note: in summer a garage in western Sydney can hit 40°C and in winter an uninsulated shed can be under 10°C. Cold ambient air cools the first layer faster than the profile expects, so winter printing often needs that +5°C bed bump even for PLA.
Step 3: Let calibration do its job
Every Bambu Lab printer runs auto bed levelling, and it works — but only if you let it. Keep Auto Bed Levelling ticked in the print dialog, especially after you've swapped plates, moved the printer, or changed the nozzle. On A1-series machines, also make sure the plate is seated flush against the locating tabs; a plate sitting slightly proud at one corner will out-fool any levelling routine. If you've recently changed nozzles or hotends, run a full calibration (flow dynamics included) from the printer menu before blaming adhesion.
Step 4: First layer settings in Bambu Studio
The stock Bambu Studio profiles are good, but three settings are worth knowing when a tricky part won't stick:
- First layer speed: drop it to 30–40 mm/s for parts with small contact patches. A slower first layer gives each line time to bond before the next one drags past it.
- Brim: for tall narrow parts or anything with small feet, a 3–5 mm outer brim is cheap insurance. Bambu Studio's “auto brim” is decent, but don't be afraid to force one on.
- First layer height: 0.2 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle is the sweet spot — enough squish to grip without ploughing.
Step 5: Rule out wet filament
Moist filament is the silent killer of first layers — the steam escaping the nozzle weakens the bond and you'll often hear faint popping as it prints. PLA absorbs moisture slower than PETG or TPU, but Australian coastal humidity gets to everything eventually. If your filament has been out of its bag for more than a few weeks, dry it (55°C for PLA, 65°C for PETG, 4–8 hours) and store it sealed with desiccant.
